Heritage College’s unique ESL for Healthcare Professional course is designed specifically for employees working in clinics, pharmacies, long-term-care centres. This program helps prepare students for the nuances of the Canadian healthcare landscape. Students of all English language levels can join in this innovative and forward-thinking program to address the needs of ESL learners who can benefit from specialized English training.

This program is designed to help healthcare employees who wish to further their English skills, improve their chances of securing better career opportunities, and increase their employability. Heritage College’s ESL for Healthcare Professionals program is designed for the real-world realities of healthcare work in Canada.

Course Overview

This program is based on the concept of Learn, Understand, Do

  • Learn – foundational English Language Skills
  • Understand – how to apply English Language Skills to Healthcare and Medicine, specifically involving cross-cultural competency in a Canadian context, and research skills
  • Do – applied vocational and career exploration, integrating classroom learning with Healthcare-based training, including document processing, computer use, and IT technical skills

 

How You'll Learn

Heritage College’s ESL for the Healthcare Professional program is offered In-Class, once per week at the Heritage College’s Sundridge Campus.

This program combines lectures, visual aides, hands-on learning via practical exercises, projects, exams and group discussions into an accessible learning experience. Validation of knowledge is done through through exams, practical tests, projects, and practicum evaluation. 

Entry Requirements

Heritage College’s ESL for the Healthcare Professional program has been developed to strengthen existing English language skills. Therefore, it is expected that all participants have a minimum level of English proficiency, equal to:

  •  CLB 4
  • IELTS 3.5
  • CELPIP 4
  • TOEFL 41-60
Due to the drop-in nature of this program, students who do not meet these prerequisites are welcome to attend, but may find the course material challenging. We encourage such students to attend LINC training at other centres in Calgary.

    Understanding the academic writing style for academic and healthcare environments in Canada.

    Developing writing skills related to accurate note taking and report writing

    Developing an understanding of how to apply the English language to diverse situations, including formal, business, academic and personal situations.

    Understanding the styles and language used in formal business writing.

    Become familiar with how to apply the English language in a multicultural environment, such as a healthcare workplace, including English etiquette, fitting into the healthcare workplace culture, and expectations of the Canadian healthcare workplace.

    Develop the skills you need to adapt to feedback, understand context, utilize softeners to encourage others, and present information clearly, concisely and coherently.
