The Mary Ann Shadd Cary Bursary

About

The Mary Ann Shadd Cary Bursary is named in memory of American-Canadian anti-slavery activist, journalist, publisher, teacher, and lawyer: Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Shadd Cary was the first Black woman to become a publisher in North America, and the first woman publisher in Canada.

This scholarship is for those who plan to enter one of Heritage Career College’s certificate or diploma programs. It is Heritage Career College’s intent to give low income, in-need individuals who are looking to transform their lives an opportunity at an affordable education.

Successful applicants will be granted a 50% reduction of their total tuition costs for the program of their choice.

Successful applicants to the Mary Ann Shadd Scholarship will meet the following criteria:

Please note: all applicants are required to submit a confidential letter explaining their personal circumstances and how this scholarship will help them achieve their academic and career goals. Applicants will also be asked to submit a tax return or other proof of income before the scholarship is ultimately issued.
