BECOMING AN EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE EDUCATOR
Become a certified early learning & child care professional in Alberta with Heritage College’s one-year Early Learning & Child Care certificate program.
Over the length of this 35-week program, you will develop the essential skills you need to obtain certification as a Level 2 Early Childhood Educator (formerly Child Development Worker) from Alberta Children’s Services, Early Childhood Development Branch. Through a combination of theory and hands-on learning, you will develop the expertise you will need to handle the daily challenges of a child care worker. You will learn about the importance of play, communications, family dynamics, the development of children, and the child care system in Alberta.
Heritage College’s one-year Early Learning & Child Care certificate program includes ten weeks of hands-on practicum experience in two separate child care centres in Southern Alberta. These can be in licensed daycares, preschools, or out-of-school care programs, depending on your particular interests. These two practicums guarantee you reach the 400 hours of practicum experience you need to be eligible for your Level 2 Early Childhood Educator certification. Graduates of our programs receive continuing support from Heritage College’s Career Services department, including help with job search, resume and LinkedIn profile reviews, and interview preparation.
Course Overview
Graduates of Heritage College’s Early Learning & Child Care program develop the pedagogical skills needed to face the daily challenges of a child care professional. Over the length of this 1-year program, you will:
- Learn the key skills and concepts embedded in Flight, Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework.
- Obtain the educational and practical training required to be eligible for certification as a Level 2 Early Childhood Educator (formerly Child Development Worker) in Alberta
- Study child development, the theory of play, observation and documentation, and the history of child care in Canada.
- Explore the many types of child care in Alberta, including daycares, preschools, family day homes and out-of-school care.
- Learn the regulations and laws that govern child care in Alberta.
How You'll Learn
Heritage College’s Early Learning & Child Care certificate has two delivery methods:
- Blended: Two 5-hour blocks a week in-class and three 5-hour blocks a week of online live lectures delivered over Zoom.
- In-Class: Five 5-hours blocks every week, delivered in-class at our Sunridge Campus
Blocks may be offered either weekday evenings (5:00-9:00 p.m. Mountain Time) or Weekends (8:00 AM-1:00 pm or 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM).
This program combines lectures, visual aides, and hands-on learning via practical exercises, projects, exams and group discussions into an accessible learning experience. Validation of knowledge is done through exams, practical tests, projects, and practicum evaluation.
Licensing
Heritage College is a licensed private career college with Alberta Advanced Education. Heritage College’s Early Learning & Child Care certificate has been recognized by Alberta Children’s Services as meeting the educational and practicum requirements for obtaining a Level 2 Early Childhood Educator certification.

REGULATORY INFORMATION
Transfer Credits
There is no Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition in this program, nor are Transfer Credits available, given its express, condensed nature. Likewise, Heritage College’s Early Learning & Child Care program is not transferable to other post-secondary institutions.
Should a student withdraw from the ELCC program at Heritage, their completed courses are recorded and presented to them on a transcript. This transcript can be forwarded to another institution upon request of the student, though Heritage College does not guarantee that completed courses will be accepted at a different institution.
Certification as a Level 2 Early Childhood Educator
Upon successful completion of the ELCC Certificate, a learner will only be supplied with an Early Learning & Child Care Certificate and transcript from Heritage College. A graduate will not be certified with Alberta Children’s Services, nor does Heritage College guarantee such certification will be granted.
After their graduation, the student must complete, on their own, an Early Childhood Educator Certification Application to obtain their status as a certified Level 2 Early Childhood Educator. This certification remains the sole discretion of Alberta Children’s Services.
The submission process for Early Childhood Educator Certification is outlined by the Certification Guide for Early Childhood Educators and includes the following steps:
- Submit an online application form
- Provide a copy of your personal identification that includes your birth date and signature.
- Request an official transcript to be sent directly from Heritage College to the Certification Office.

No high school diploma? No problem!
Heritage College doesn’t require a high school diploma for our mature admissions pathway.
Standard admission is for students who have graduated from high school or another educational institute within the past year.
Students must be 18 years of age or older, and must meet the following criteria:
- a. Students must meet ONE of the following criteria:
- Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript
- a non-Alberta equivalent from another recognized nation where English is the primary language of instruction (Please consult Page 7 of the Certification Guide for Early Childhood Educators), verified by transcript
- b. Also, students must:
- i. Pass the admissions interview with the Program Lead, which will determine a potential student’s personal suitability to the Certificate’s goals and outcomes.
- ii. Demonstrate necessary computer knowledge/skills (assessed during an admissions interview).
- iii. Provide a current (completed within three previous months) Police Information Check (PIC) with a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS). The student must submit this check before admittance to the Certificate. The existence of a criminal record may postpone or prevent fieldwork placements, therefore subsequently affecting a potential student’s successful completion of the Certificate.
- iv. Meet minimum strength & physical wellness requirements (ability to lift 20 kg)
Mature admission is for students who are returning to education after spending at least one year in the workforce, and who are applying to our standard diploma or certificate programs.
Students must meet ALL of the following criteria:
- a. Be 18 years or older when they submit their application.
- b. Meets the English requirements through ONE of the following:
- i. successful completion of a Grade 12 Alberta Education English Language Arts course, verified by transcript
- ii. transcripts demonstrating the successful completion of, at minimum, one year of full-time post-secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction in a recognized nation where English is the primary language of instruction (Please consult Page 7 of the Certification Guide for Early Childhood Educators)
- If your education was completed in a country not listed on Page 7 of the Certification Guide for Early Childhood Educators, a language proficiency assessment will be required. The language proficiency assessments accepted for this Certificate are:
- i. Original CELPIP General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program). Level 7 must be achieved in all areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) within the same exam results.
- ii. IELTS General (International English Language Testing System). A score of 6 must be achieved in all areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) within the same exam results
- c. Passes the admissions interview with the Program Lead, which determined the potential student’s personal suitability to the Certificate’s goals and outcomes.
- d. Demonstrates necessary computer knowledge/skills (assessed during an admissions interview).
- e. Demonstrates academic competencies through passing the Heritage College Wonderlic Basic Skills Test
- f. Provides a current (completed within three previous months) Police Information Check (PIC) with a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS). The applicant must submit this check before admittance to the Certificate. The existence of a criminal record may postpone or prevent fieldwork placements, therefore subsequently affecting a potential student’s successful completion of the Certificate.
- g. Meets the minimum strength & physical wellness requirements (ability to lift 20 kg)
Heritage College will only accept domestic applicants, with a priority placed on students from the Greater Calgary Region, Central Alberta and Southern Alberta

Practicum Requirements
Early Learning & Child Care Certificate students complete their education with 400 hours of practicum experience at two separate partner child care centers. These may be a licensed daycare, a preschool, or an out-of-school care program. To participate in the practicum, students must satisfy the following prerequisites.
- Police Reference Check (Clearance) of Criminal Record
- Achieve an average minimum mark of 60% in all of the theory module assignments and exams for the preceding semester.
- Achieve a passing grade (P) in the Student Employment Services module
- Achieve certification from the two certificates in the Administration & Professionalism in Early Childhood Education course: Standard Child Care First Aid & CPR and Food Handler
Graduation Requirements
To successfully graduate from the Early Learning & Child Care Certificate program, students must:
- Achieve an average minimum mark of 60% in all of the module assignments, exams and practicum assessments
- Have completed all practicum hours for both practicums
- Have current Police Clearance

Program Outline
Our 1-year (880-hour) Early Learning & Child Care Certificate is divided into four blocks of programs: two semesters of theory, totalling 480 hours; and two work placement practicums, totalling 400 hours.
Technical Skills in Early Childhood Education
This course is designed to provide a foundation of technical skill to support all early childhood educators in the field. The knowledge of practical computer skills will empower Early Learning Educators to support their programs, children and families better.
This course is split into different modules, which students can complete individually. The modules are as follows:

Introduction to Early Childhood Education
This course is designed to provide learners will the essential components for a healthy and productive career in the field of early childhood education. This theory-centric course focuses on how the development and learning of children can be fostered and supported when they can participate in a child-centred and play-based curriculum. The course will connect an educator’s role in creating a supportive and conducive learning environment to the success of their learners.
English Communication & Composition
Communication and composition provide students with a solid grounding in the concepts and strategies of scholarly communication, including written and verbal communication. Students will apply these academic skills to communication-related work in the early learning childcare sector.
Observation and Documentation in Early Childhood Education
This course is designed to support students in correlating information from direct observation with an interpretation of learning and guided reflections. Using a variety of observational methods, the student will develop skills in noticing, recording, understanding and assessing the development of young children. Emphasis is placed on the ethical importance of ensuring the accuracy, sensitivity and privacy concerns of observations and documentation in early childhood settings.
Administration and Professionalism in Early Childhood Education
This module is designed to support students in understanding the unique guiding practices related to the childcare profession and prepare students for their first work placement practicum. Additionally, students will gain insight into Alberta’s ELCC Act. Students will also have the opportunity to build on their skills to keep children safe and healthy in the childcare field, including completing their Standard Child Care First Aid & CPR certification and their Food Handler certification.
Play & Childhood Development
This course is designed to support a learner’s exploration of the theoretical framework of play. Learners will develop an understanding of the characteristics of play and how the environment, as well as culture, influences the application of developmentally appropriate educational practices. The course will explore different play experiences, including block play, dramatic play, math and science, music and movement, as well as literacy and the use of technology in the modern early childhood learning space.
Learning Through Play
This course is designed to reinforce the importance and value of outdoor play in a child’s life. During this course, learners will focus on the relationship between natural and outdoor play to each child’s development, health, learning and thinking. The transition from theory to practice will be reflected in the learner developing an understanding of curriculum building using all four seasons to engage in natural and risky play. This theoretical application includes ensuring there is a significant connection to a child’s learning and development, and assessing and documenting the appropriateness of outdoor play spaces.
Positive Guidance of Young Children
This course is designed to explore effective guiding strategies for young children and how to make positive impacts on a child’s learning and development. Learners will develop an understanding of challenging behaviours while considering the practical application of skills to mitigate their effects. This course will develop a learner’s ability to form relationships with young children, supporting the development of positive self-esteem as well as an empathetic physical environment. Through a process of reflection, each learner will deepen their understanding of a child’s typical development and life stages.
Theories of Child Growth & Development
This course is designed to introduce theory and research as it applies to the childcare field. Learners will develop an understanding of the history of childcare and modern pedagogical theories as they relate to a child’s development. The course will include a foundation of a child’s development from infancy to adolescence, focusing on physical growth, cognitive development, intelligence, language development, emotional development and moral development. Learners will explore the implementation of optimal contexts for development and come to understand the role of an educator as a co-learner, co-facilitator, and co-researcher.
ELCC Curriculum Development
This course emphasizes programming through the early years, focusing on development, from infancy to school age. Programming will include a variety of practical approaches in Canada. Students will focus on developing a child-centred classroom, as reinforced by theory and the student’s understanding of a young child’s growth and abilities, focusing on the child’s whole learning process. This course will develop practical skills, such as planning the environment, engaging with materials, and ensuring the educator’s role while implementing, guiding, and evaluating activities offered for individual children and groups.
Family & Community Relationships in Early Childhood Education
This course is designed to develop an understanding and awareness of the relationship between young children and their families. Through examining Bronfenbrenner’s theory of the ecological model—specifically focusing on the socio-economical influences on a family—learners’ will develop an understanding of the importance of a family’s involvement within the educational development of young children. Learners will also examine the educator’s role and relationship with parents in the parents’ role as primary caregivers. In addition to this connection with families, learners will also develop an awareness and understanding of community agencies that can support families and childhood education.
Student Employment Strategies
In this course, student cover the skills needed to land their dream job, including resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and job search skills.
