Wondering what a career working at a pharmacy would look like?

Heritage College is offering a unique, one-day crash course exploring a day in the life of a pharmacy assistant. Pharmacy assistants represent an essential member of pharmacy teams. Pharmacy assistants process prescriptions, conduct inventory, dispense medication under the supervision of a pharmacist, and generally help to ensure a pharmacy runs smoothly for patients, technicians and pharmacists.

If you’re interested in learning more about what the job of a pharmacy assistant is like, consider signing up for this class, taught by licensed Alberta pharmacists. This class includes hands-on experience in our pharmacy dispensing lab, and covers the following skills you can start using right away:

  • Reading and understanding drug labels and doctor prescriptions
  • The ins-and-outs of the pharmaceutical measurement systems and the devices that help pharmacists and pharmacy assistants dispense your drugs
  • Basic medical and pharmacological terminology
  • The differences between brand name and generic drugs
  • Different dosage forms in the Canadian market
  • How the human body to different drugs, and how different over-the-counter drugs can interact
  • How to check your blood pressure and blood glucose levels
  • Mixing an antibiotic suspension for children
  • The role of pharmacy assistants in community pharmacies, clinics and in Alberta hospitals
  • The job outlook for pharmacy assistants in Calgary and Alberta, including wages and employment opportunities

We cover all of this over our the course of our one-day class. As part of this class, students will get a taste of what it is like studying at Heritage College, and can ask us questions about any of the programs we offer. 

This class includes lunch and refreshments provided by Heritage College as part of the registration free.

Becoming a pharmacy assistant is the quickest and way to enter into the pharmacy industry.  Here at Heritage College, we offer a 4-month Pharmacy Assistant Diploma. Our graduates have found employment with Alberta Health Services, Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, and many independently owned pharmacies in Alberta. Other graduates have gone on to work at clinics, pharmaceutical wholesalers, and laboratories.

As of Winter 2020, the government of Alberta predicts demand for pharmacy assistants will be above average when compared to other careers,. The government also predicts the average annual salary for professionals in this field will be $31,912. 

Students who attend this class and decide to pursue a career as a pharmacy assistant will receive $100 off their tuition to our college’s Pharmacy Assistant Diploma.
